Flooding caused by days of heavy rainfall in Igarra, headquarters of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, washed away graves, destroyed at least 20 houses and killed a motorcyclist, with local authorities confirming the incident on Saturday.
The downpour, which affected Igarra and surrounding communities, submerged homes for days and swept away graves in residential compounds, including one on Okpe Road near the Igarra Police Station.
The residence of former Edo State Chief of Staff, Taiwo Akerele, was also affected.
The worst-hit areas include Iretutu Axis, Pope Francis Road, Okpe Road, Market Road and Rest House Road.
Residents said the flood occurred exactly 10 years after a similar disaster claimed a life and destroyed several homes in the area.
A motorcyclist swept away by the flood was found dead two days later.
A resident, Aliyu, described the incident as tragic, saying the victim’s body was recovered after an extensive search.
Ward 1 Councillor Asebe Rabi described the flood as devastating, noting that many residents lost homes, property and sources of livelihood.
Akoko-Edo Local Government Chairman Alabi Oshionogue said the council had notified the Edo State Emergency Management Agency and was working with the agency to support affected residents.
He added that officials had been directed to clear blocked drainages and remove debris left behind by the flood.
