Deadly heatwave grips Europe, experts warn residents

Large parts of Western Europe are enduring a severe and prolonged heatwave that has left dozens dead, disrupted public services, and prompted authorities across several countries to urge residents to reduce outdoor activity and take protective measures against extreme temperatures.
The crisis has been most intense in France, where Paris recorded a June temperature high of 40.9 degrees Celsius, marking one of the hottest days ever recorded in the capital during this period.
City officials warned residents, particularly those engaged in active outdoor routines, to slow down and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun as health risks increase.
Authorities noted that while traditionally vulnerable groups such as the elderly remain at risk, a growing number of heat-related incidents are now affecting middle-aged individuals who underestimate the danger of extreme temperatures.
Officials in Paris stressed that many people between the ages of 50 and 70, often in good health, continue normal routines despite dangerous conditions, leading to increased health emergencies and preventable deaths.
Across France, at least 48 drowning deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the heatwave, as individuals attempted to cool off in rivers, lakes and other water bodies.
In addition, several heat-related fatalities have been reported, including cases involving children left in overheated vehicles, further highlighting the severity of the ongoing crisis.
The extreme temperatures are also affecting public infrastructure and services, with schools closing, transportation schedules disrupted, and cultural landmarks such as the Louvre Museum adjusting operations to protect visitors and staff.
Britain also recorded its highest temperature for the month of June, reaching 36.1 degrees Celsius in southern regions, as a large heat dome continues to trap warm air across the continent.
Meteorological agencies have attributed the prolonged heatwave to a weather pattern known as an Omega block, which traps hot air over large areas for extended periods while limiting the movement of cooler air systems.
Scientists and climate experts warn that such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense due to the effects of human-driven climate change, which is altering global atmospheric patterns.
Italy has also been severely affected, with reports indicating multiple heat-related deaths among workers, farmers and vulnerable individuals across several regions.
Health authorities in Italy have responded by calling emergency meetings to coordinate responses and reduce further loss of life as temperatures remain dangerously high.
Other countries, including Germany and Austria, are expected to experience even more intense conditions in the coming days, with forecasts predicting temperatures as high as 41 degrees Celsius in some regions.
Germany’s national rail operator has already begun allowing passengers to cancel travel plans due to safety concerns related to the extreme heat.
Austria’s weather services have issued red-level heat warnings, particularly for northeastern regions including Vienna, where record temperatures are possible.
Italy is also preparing for continued extreme conditions, especially in northern plains and central inland areas, where temperatures are expected to remain significantly above seasonal averages.
Health experts emphasize that air conditioning, while increasingly in demand, remains limited across many parts of Europe, leaving large populations vulnerable during prolonged heat events.
The growing frequency of such heatwaves has sparked renewed concern about climate resilience, urban preparedness and public health strategies across the continent.
Meteorologists warn that while some regions may see temporary relief, the broader pattern of extreme heat is expected to continue intensifying in future summers.
Authorities across Europe continue to urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid peak sunlight hours, and follow official safety guidance as the continent faces one of its most widespread and deadly heat events in recent years.
