Contractors Set to Begin Emergency Flood Control Works in Duguri

By Abdullahi Lukman

Contractors are expected to commence emergency intervention works in Duguri community, Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State, on Monday following an assessment of flood-related damage by state government officials.

The move comes after Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed directed the Ministry of Works and Transport to conduct an immediate evaluation of the affected areas and recommend both short-term relief measures and long-term infrastructure solutions to address recurring flooding challenges in the state.

A team led by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Engr. Mohammed Hamisu Garba, visited the community to inspect critical infrastructure affected by the floods, including drainage systems, culverts, roads, and erosion-prone locations.

The assessment is expected to form the basis of a detailed technical report that will guide urgent government intervention.

Speaking during the inspection, Garba said the exercise demonstrates the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through sustainable infrastructure development and effective flood-control measures.

He also urged residents to support government efforts by maintaining proper environmental sanitation practices.

According to him, indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels obstructs water flow during heavy rainfall and contributes significantly to flooding incidents.

Community leaders and residents who accompanied the assessment team welcomed the government’s swift response to the disaster.

The Councilor of Duguri, Malam Lawal Ya’u, expressed appreciation to Governor Mohammed for the prompt intervention, while other stakeholders called for the immediate execution of the proposed engineering works to prevent further damage to homes, roads, and livelihoods.

The planned intervention is expected to provide immediate relief to affected residents and strengthen the community’s resilience against future flooding.
