CAMIC Seeks Strategies to Mitigate Volcanic Eruptions Impact

An environmental advocacy body, Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC) has emphasized the urgent need for sustainable strategies to mitigate the impact of volcanic eruptions.
It said while volcanic activity is a natural geological process, proactive measures can help reduce its devastating consequences on communities, ecosystems, and the climate.
CAMIC advocated for strategies to curb the adverse effects of volcanic eruptions such as investing in advanced volcano monitoring technologies.
The body in a statement on Tuesday noted that communities living near active volcanoes must adopt strategic land-use policies to minimize risks.
This includes restricting settlements in high-risk zones and promoting resilient infrastructure designs that withstand ash fallout and tremors.
According to CAMIC, volcanic eruptions can lead to deforestation and soil degradation.
Planting trees and preserving forests near volcanic regions can help stabilize soil, reduce landslides, and protect water sources from contamination by volcanic ash.
“Governments and policymakers should integrate volcanic risk management into national climate adaptation plans. This includes funding for emergency response teams, public education campaigns, and sustainable rebuilding efforts after eruptions.
“Public awareness and community-led initiatives are crucial in mitigating volcanic risks. CAMIC supports local education programs that teach residents how to respond effectively to volcanic hazards and embrace sustainable recovery practices.
“Volcanic eruptions pose significant environmental and socio-economic challenges, but with proper planning, monitoring, and sustainable policies, their impact can be minimized,” the statement said.
CAMIC urges governments, researchers, and communities to collaborate in adopting long-term resilience strategies for a safer and more sustainable future,” the statement which was issued by Mr. Pius Alabi, CAMIC Chief Growth Officer added.
