Hosting the world’s biggest sporting event comes with a significant environmental footprint. Millions of international visitors travel across continents, thousands of flights crisscross the skies daily, hotels operate at maximum capacity, food production surges to meet unprecedented demand, energy consumption rises dramatically, and mountains of waste are generated within a few short weeks.
The FIFA World Cup is therefore much more than a football tournament. It is also one of the world’s largest temporary environmental experiments.
As countries increasingly compete to host global sporting events, an important question emerges: Can the World Cup truly become sustainable, or are its environmental costs simply too great?
The answer lies somewhere between ambition and reality.
