Beavers strengthen drought resilience in England

Beavers are playing an increasingly important role in helping England cope with drought by creating wetlands that store water, improve river flows and provide safe habitats for wildlife, according to researchers studying the animals’ environmental impact.
Scientists say the dams, ponds and canals built by beavers are improving the resilience of landscapes experiencing prolonged hot and dry weather, at a time when more than half of England has officially been declared to be in drought because of declining water supplies.
Dr Alan Puttock of the University of Exeter’s Centre for Resilience in Environment, Water and Waste said beavers naturally reshape landscapes in ways that benefit both ecosystems and communities.
He explained that the animals construct dams that slow the movement of water through rivers and streams, allowing it to spread across surrounding land and form extensive wetland systems.
According to Puttock, modern landscapes have been heavily modified through drainage systems that remove water quickly, making them more vulnerable during periods of drought.
He said beaver-created wetlands reverse some of those effects by holding water for longer and gradually releasing it back into rivers, helping to sustain water levels during dry conditions.
The stored water also creates important refuges for fish, amphibians, birds and other wildlife that struggle to survive in parched environments.
Puttock noted that each wetland pond created by beavers can hold around 1,000 cubic metres of water.
He added that the network of leaky dams built by the animals can reduce peak river flows by about 30 percent while improving water availability during dry periods.
Although he cautioned that beavers alone cannot solve drought challenges, he said expanding beaver populations alongside other nature-based restoration projects could significantly strengthen the country’s ability to cope with increasingly frequent dry spells.
Beavers were once widespread across Britain before being hunted to extinction about 400 years ago.
Their return to the wild began in 2015 when they were reintroduced to the River Otter in Devon as part of a long-term conservation programme.
Earlier this year, another milestone was reached when four pairs of beavers were released into the Par and Fowey rivers in Cornwall to support habitat restoration and biodiversity recovery.
Researchers describe beavers as ecosystem engineers because of their remarkable ability to reshape landscapes through dam building and wetland creation.
While early research into beavers focused largely on reducing flood risks, scientists now say their environmental benefits extend much further.
Puttock explained that the wetlands created by beavers not only reduce flooding but also increase resilience against drought, offering natural solutions to the growing impacts of climate change.
He added that recent studies, including research from the United States, have highlighted another important benefit of healthy wetlands.
Because wetlands retain large volumes of water, they can also help reduce the spread and intensity of wildfires by acting as natural firebreaks.
Puttock said landscapes that remain wet are less likely to burn during prolonged heatwaves, making restored wetlands increasingly valuable as temperatures continue to rise.
Researchers believe that combining beaver reintroductions with broader wetland restoration and other nature-based solutions will improve water security, strengthen biodiversity and create healthier, more climate-resilient landscapes for both people and wildlife across England.
