The Anambra State House of Assembly has summoned key commissioners and government officials to explain measures being taken to address recurring flood disasters across the state.
The lawmakers took the decision amid severe flooding that has submerged homes, markets, businesses and farmlands in parts of Ogbaru, Idemili North and Oyi local government areas following persistent rainfall and rising water levels from the River Niger.
Affected areas include Relief Market, Ochanja Market, Building Materials Market in Ogidi and parts of Onitsha. Residents reported significant losses, with many families displaced and seeking shelter in safer locations.
During plenary on Tuesday, lawmakers expressed concern over the increasing impact of flooding on lives and property, blaming blocked drainage channels, poor waste disposal practices and inadequate flood-control measures.
The Assembly invited the Commissioners for Environment, Physical Planning and Urban Development, and Works and Infrastructure to appear before it on June 25 to outline government efforts to prevent future flood disasters and improve environmental management across the state.
