Airtel Nigeria mounts nationwide campaign against plastic pollution

By Abdullahi Lukman
Airtel Nigeria has launched a nationwide campaign to combat plastic pollution, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability.
The initiative, called #UnPlasticAfrica, kicked off on June 3 with employees across the company’s six operating regions participating in a week of education, advocacy, and cleanup activities.
The campaign aligns with the 2025 World Environment Day theme, #BeatPlasticPollution, which aims to raise awareness about the urgent global challenge posed by plastic waste.
World Environment Day is observed every year on June 5 as a platform for environmental action worldwide.
Speaking on the campaign, Airtel Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Dinesh Balsingh, said, “As we invest in Nigeria’s digital future, we are equally committed to protecting the environment that sustains us.
From AI-powered services that reduce paper use to partnerships that connect rural areas without environmental disruption, we are embedding sustainability into every layer of our operations.”
Dr. Hassan Sanuth, Director of Sanitation Services at Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, highlighted the severity of plastic pollution in urban centers like Lagos.
He noted that plastic waste is clogging drains, polluting water bodies, and posing serious public health risks. “Every little action counts,” he said, urging both individuals and organizations to take bold steps to address the crisis.
As part of the campaign, Airtel staff volunteers, working alongside local partners, led efforts to collect plastic waste and conducted environmental hygiene training for market vendors and shoppers.
This initiative is part of Airtel Nigeria’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, which integrates environmental stewardship into its business practices.
