Agility logistics park in Ghana earns edge advanced certification

By Abdullahi Lukman

Agility has announced that its Agility Logistics Park (ALP) in Tema, Ghana, has received EDGE Advanced certification for energy- and resource-efficient buildings, making it the latest facility in the company’s African network to attain the global green building standard.

The certification brings the total number of EDGE Advanced-certified warehouses across Agility Logistics Parks to 17, with certified facilities now operating in every country where the company has logistics parks.

EDGE, which stands for Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies, is a global certification system managed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group.

The certification requires buildings to achieve at least 40 per cent reductions in energy use, water consumption, and embodied carbon in materials compared to standard local structures.

Located in the Tema Free Zone near Tema Port and Ghana’s capital, Accra, the 160,000 square metre logistics park provides international-standard warehouse facilities for multinational and local businesses.

All five warehouses at the facility have now been certified as EDGE Advanced.

According to Agility, the certified warehouses in Ghana record average energy savings of 68 per cent, water savings of 38 per cent, and use construction materials with 63 per cent lower embodied carbon compared to conventional buildings.

Vice President of Agility Africa, Charles Gassoub, said the certification reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability and efficient infrastructure development.

He noted that the facilities would help customers lower utility costs, improve operational efficiency, and meet their environmental, social, and governance goals.

IFC Ghana Division Director, Nathalie Kouassi Akon, described the achievement as a sign of growing momentum for green buildings in Ghana and across Africa.

She said projects such as the Tema logistics park contribute to economic resilience and support Ghana’s sustainable development objectives by reducing energy and resource consumption.

Agility Logistics Parks currently operates warehouse facilities across several African countries, including Côte d’Ivoire, Mozambique, Egypt, and Nigeria, where a 270,000 square metre logistics park is under development in Lagos.

Agility Africa Chief Executive Officer, Geoffrey White, said the company’s strategy is focused on building a continent-wide network of secure and efficient warehouse parks to support business growth.

According to him, the availability of ready-built international-standard warehouses helps businesses reduce startup costs, improve market access, and expand operations more quickly across African markets.
